physiotherapy is covered in Alberta, but not for everything.

Physio is short for physiotherapy.

Just like most aspects of the Alberta Health Care Program, determining what is and is not covered can be complex.

In general, Alberta Health Care covers most “medically necessary” things, but of course, many of these things can be debated.

So what about physiotherapy? Is it covered by Alberta Health Care?

Are Physios Free In Alberta?

Yes, physiotherapy is covered by Alberta Health Care in some circumstances.

Physiotherapists are in a category known as limited, or partial coverage. This means it is only covered in specific cases.

Beginning March 1, 2022, physiotherapy is covered by Alberta Health care for the following:

  • Fractures
  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Recovery from hip or knee joint surgery

Alberta Health Care will NOT be covering physiotherapy for the following:

  • Bursitis
  • Strain
  • Tendinitis
  • Sprains

Some physiotherapy may be covered by private insurance.
