Alberta’s licensing program is a 3 stage graduating process. The first stage is the Class 7 Learners license.
You can get your learners license at 14 years old, but it comes with some restrictions when it comes to cars and trucks.
Can you drive a moped with a Class 7 Learners License in Alberta?
You can legally drive a moped with a Class 7 Learners in Alberta.
In fact, the Class 7 is not considered to be a learners license when it comes to mopeds, and supervision is not required.
You may use your Class 7 to legally drive a moped in Alberta, as long as you adhere to the following:
- Be at least 14 years old (Must be 14 to get the learners anyway)
- Wear a helmet (Not just any helmet. It must meet certain legal and safety standards)
- Moped is Licensed and Insured
- Drive along the right side of the road by curb (Unless making a left hand turn), or either side if it’s a one way. More details on where you can ride a moped
- If you are under the age of 16, you can not legally have a passenger on a moped
Some small bike-like engine propelled vehicles may look like mopeds but are not. Make sure you know the difference, and the different laws pertaining to each one.
If it exceeds 50cc or has a top speed over 70km/h, it is no longer classified as a moped. Additional licensing would be required.
If you are simply dealing with a power assisted bicycle, “Power Bicycle”, then there are less licensing requirements.

Power Bicycles do not require any operators license, and it does not have to be registered or insured. You have to wear a helmet and be at least 12 years old.
