Can you legally own a Scorpion in Alberta?
You can legally own a scorpion (Family: Buthidae)as a pet in Alberta. Scorpions are not listed as a controlled animal.
Individual municipalities might have some bylaws and regulations. Check with your local authorities.
Of course your landlord might also have something to say about letting keep a scorpion on their property.
Where to Find Scorpions in Alberta?
You can actually find scorpions in the wild in Alberta, though they are not really that common.
Alberta’s climate is not suitable for scorpions. The only species that ventures up into Canada is the Northern Scorpion.
The Northern Scorpion might venture up into dryer areas of Southern Alberta, but they tend not to venture too much more North than Red Deer.
They are technically venomous, but not deadly to humans. You can liken it to a bee sting. Other than pain and swelling, it is mostly harmless, but certain individuals may be allergic or have bad reactions.
They should always be treated with respect, and generally left alone.
