There are many types of birds listed in the Alberta Controlled animals regulation. For reference, there are other animals on the list as well.
“Controlled” simply means you need special permissions to own one, if you can own one at all.

So what about peacocks? Are they on the list?
Can you have a pet peacock legally in Alberta?
You can legally own pet peacocks in Alberta. They are not currently listed as a controlled animal under the birds section.
Peacocks and pheasants belong to the same phaianidae family. Several types of pheasants are controlled in Alberta, but not peacocks.
Peacocks are considered exotic pets, and require ample outdoor space. While owning them is legal, their needs shouldn’t be taken lightly.
These are birds that are known for their loud calls, especially during mating season. So noise levels are also a concern for neighbours and bylaw enforcement.
While you won’t find peacocks on the controlled animals list, keep in mind that these regulations are at the provincial level. Municipalities can make their own additional bylaws and rules on the matter.
Check with the rules of your local town or city to be sure.
