Transporting propane cylinders in Canada (not just Alberta) is subject to specific guidelines and regulations.
These are regulations set at the Federal level through the Canadian Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act.
How Many Propane Tanks Can I Transport in Alberta, Canada?
Everywhere in Canada, you can transport up to 5 propane cylinders in your vehicle. The limitations are different depending on the type of vehicle:
- Open Vehicles: Limit of 5 – You can transport as long as the total combined mass of propane and cylinders does not exceed 500 kg (1102.3 lbs)
- Enclosed Vehicles: Limit of 5 – each weighing less than 30 kgs (66 lbs), can be transported.
If these limits are exceeded, additional placarding and documentation are required, and the operator must have specialized training.
Cylinder Security and Positioning
Cylinders should be transported upright and securely fastened to prevent movement.
In enclosed vehicles, cylinders must be upright and secured.
In open vehicles, cylinders should be upright and secured in a way that their labels are visible from outside the vehicle. The fill station can provide you with labels or stickers if needed.
In passenger vehicles, place the cylinders on the rear floor with a window open or in the trunk inside a tote box.
If placing in a trunk, use a device to hold the trunk partially open for ventilation.
