When it comes to Canadian law on drones, they are classified as “UAVs” (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles).
These are governed by Transport Canada. Canada has laws and regulations in place dictating where you can and can not fly your drone.
So where can you fly a drone in Alberta?

You can fly a drone in any area that is not considered to be a “No Drone Zone” in Alberta.
No Drone Zones include National Parks, over border crossings, around airports and aerodromes, and any busy populated area.
Each of these “No Drone Zones” have further specific details:
- National Parks – You can not fly your drone recreationally in any National Park at any time. There are exceptions for commercial drone flying and video capture, but this requires permits, and special permissions.
- Over Border Crossings – Same as National Parks. Special permissions and situations only.
- Airports, Aerodromes, Heliports – You must not ever fly a drone within 5.6 kilometres (3 nautical miles) from airports or 1.9 kilometres (1 nautical mile) from heliports. Also, do not fly anywhere near airplanes, helicopters, and other drones.
- Busy Populated Areas – Fly away from bystanders, at a minimum distance of 30 meters for basic operations. Also, Avoid forest fires, outdoor concerts, parades, advertised events or at the location of emergency operations.
You also must keep your drone at a height under 122 meters (400 feet) in the air.
